Word of October
Hamdeli is usually translated as empathy. The literal reading is better.
Ham means same, or together. Del means heart. Hamdeli is the state of being of one heart with someone — not agreeing with them, not understanding them intellectually. Feeling alongside them.
The distinction matters, because agreement is the thing we have least of. You can be of one heart with someone you argue with all evening. You can share a country, a language and a kitchen with someone and never once feel it.
همدلی is not something you are. It is something you keep doing.
Persian keeps the word in circulation for ordinary things. A friend who turns up without being asked. A stranger who reads the look on your face in a waiting room and says nothing, correctly. A room of people who disagree about almost everything and still go quiet together when the music starts.
None of that requires sameness. That is the whole point of the word.
This month we are thinking about what it means to build a community on hamdeli — one that holds together not because everyone thinks the same way or wants the same things, but because enough of us decided to feel alongside each other anyway.
Unity was never uniformity. Persian had a word for that long before we needed a theme.
