Or should they always remain as dissidents and perennial strangers from power? How should we assess the contributions of those intellectuals who regard themselves as \u201cintellectual-statesmen\u201d <\/span>(<\/span>dowltmard-e Rowshanfekr<\/span><\/i>) <\/span>and take an interest in joining the machinery of the state?<\/span> It will be argued that within Iran\u2019s intellectual milieu both before and after the revolution, we have generally frowned upon the notion of \u201c<\/span>dowltmard-e Rowshanfekr<\/span><\/i>\u201d and instead have embraced a heroic view of \u201cpublic intellectuals\u201d as those speaking truth to power.
