Dr. Fariborz Mokhtari’s critically acclaimed recent book, In the Lion's Shadow: The Iranian Schindler and his Homeland in the Second World War was originally published in 2011, yet has been republished twice since.
An Iranian diplomat in Paris representing his country's neutrality in WWII and his nation's culture of tolerance, utilized his office, diplomatic influence, legal skill and creative wit to save hundreds of Jewish families during the German occupation of France. The Allied invasion and occupation of Iran in 1941 cost him his diplomatic immunity and status, but he continued his efforts. Even after Iran declared war on Germany and its new government ordered his return, he remained in Paris to help his fellow Iranians and their non-Iranian relatives, friends and associates at great risk to himself and his career. The book reflects his commitment, but also his nation's sentiment and the treatment Iran and Iranians received under the Allied occupation. The book was republished in paperback form in the United States in April 2012.
Dr. Mokhtari will attend Tirgan 2015 to discuss his masterful book, to be followed by a Q&A session and book signing by the author.

Royal Caravanserais in Achaemenid Era

The expansion of the newly formed Achaemenid Empire was an outcome of the great conquests of Cyrus the great, a man who, through his wisdom, could bring half of the world population in his time together and rule upon them in peace, without the horrifying bloodshed associated commonly with that era. The importance of these conquests becomes even more noticeable knowing that the conquering king based his achievements on solid grounds and after his death a capable successor continued to protect the security of the conquered lands. From numerous factors that benefited the protection of the security of the Empire, one is the construction of the caravan roads under the name of the Royal’s Road, which connected the vast territory of the Achaemenid Empire. The construction of the Royal’s Road not only led to more control over the conquered and dominion lands, it was also a means to facilitate commerce and bring various communities and nations closer together. Along the Royal’s Road, there were stops and resorts. These resorts no longer exist and the only reliable evidence for their existence is from a document collection found in Persepolis and Pasargad treasury. Along this road, resorts were built which in this article are referred to as the Achaemenid Caravanserai. We are trying to find whether the Caravanserais that were mentioned by historians and geographers such as Estakhri, Ibn Hoghal, Ibn Balkhi and other were the same ones that existed during the Achaemenid time. Are the roads the same roads and the Caravanserai were the same too?

Exile, Love and Poetry: A Journey Through Persian Literature.

In this talk, Ms. Anvar will evoke the history of love poetry in Persian literature and show how the classical themes and images of profane love were gradually transmuted into a language that expressed mystical love and longing. An analysis of poems by Rudaki, Nezami, Rûmi and Hâfez will show us that poetry was the only possible answer to the feeling of exile, separation and longing, be it worldly or spiritual. It is only through poetic evocation that the gap of absence can be filled and the beauty of the Beloved can be described. The powers of the poetic language are the media through which the soul is awakened and made aware of its separation from the primordial Beauty.

Naqsh-e Rostam (Rostam Inscription): A look at the historical identity of Iran

Darius the First, the great Achaemenid king, chose to build his tomb within the rocky walls of the mount Hossein-Abad knowing that the Ilami relief on the mural was indicative of its important values. Around eight centuries after Cyrus, Bahram the Second, the fifth Sassanid king, ignored the importance of the Ilami relief and ordered lithographers to carve his and his companions image on it. In this talk, Mr. Atabaki is going to introduce some of the Naqsh-e Rostam reliefs and explore a small section of the Iranian historical identity by referring to some of the available inscriptions.

The Canticle of the Birds by ‘Attâr’ or the Art of Spiritual flight

Leili Anvar and Frédéric Ferney read passages of the poem (in English with passages of the original Persian text) accompanied by a Persian musician, playing the parts of the hoopoe and of different birds, dervishes, sages, fools, and princesses, telling stories sometimes tragic, sometimes comic, always meaningful, they invite the audience to enter the poetic world of ‘Attâr and to embark on the journey of love and wisdom. Ardently yearning to find their monarch, all the world’s birds gather in sonorous assembly. Guided by the hoopoe, the messenger of Solomon, the birds take wing towards the Sîmorgh, the Divine Being, who dwells on the heights of mythical Mount Qâf, on the edge of the horizon of the rising Sun. Only the hoopoe knows how long and arduous the journey will be. The birds will have to cross seven valleys, first that of the Quest, then those of Love, of Insight into Mystery, of Detachment and Serenity, of Unity, of Awe, and lastly of Poverty and Nothingness, to reach at length the Royal Throne. At first each bird, still prisoner to earthly ties, hesitates to take wing. So the hoopoe tells each bird a parable, a tale within a tale urging each winged creature to cast aside its worldly goods, loves and certainties, to give up its ego in order to undertake the journey. For at the end of the path rises the Sun-like Beloved Being. This Performance has been first created in its English version for the Sufi Festival of Jodhpur and Nagaur 2015.
