Sarv Music Academy Choir,was formed in 2013 with the initiative of soprano Mona Manoochehri and Behrouz Bakhtiari. It has attracted singers from the Iranian community in Toronto and has been training, practicing, and performing regularly since it’s launch. Training has included vocal training and techniques, solfege, and preparing for performances. Their repertoire includes Persian and English pieces. Past performances include Sarv Academy student concerts and Tirgan 2013 spontaneous (flash mob) performance. In Tirgan 2015, Sarv Music Academy Choir 15 vocalists and a pianist will perform an attractive set of choral repertoire, including folk songs from all corners of Iran, songs about homeland, and other popular melodies arranged for choir, from sweet lullabies of Gorgan, and jolly melodies of Guilan to energetic songs of Kurdistan. Most melodies of our homeland are not ordinarily sung together, but by a solo singer. Singing these songs as a group in harmony, brings to life a new aspect of their beauty, and singing together deepens a sense of group work and collective identity.

This concert brings together two virtuoso musicians steeped in the traditional music of their respective cultures – Persia (Iran) and Anatolia (Turkey). The classical music traditions of Persia and that of Ottoman Turkey have much in common. They share the ancient modal compositional system known as maqam and improvisation plays a definitive role in performance. Likewise, the regional folk music of these two countries have much in common: the similarity of instruments such as the Kurdish and Persian tanbur and setar to the Turkish saz, the strumming techniques used for these instruments, and the high keening vocal techniques so common to mountainous lands and used by singers throughout this vast area. The music performed by these two musicians, while derived from ancient roots, is thoroughly modern. It is purely instrumental which is a considerable deviation from tradition in both cultures where the singer is considered pre-eminent. While traditionally sung poetry is an integral aspect of virtually all Middle Eastern music, in this case it is the sound of the instruments that delivers the poetry. This more abstract manner of conveying emotion and spirituality has always been present in Eastern music; instrumental music in India has long been at the service of vocal music and the most esteemed instrumental style in North India is that which approximates to the human voice. In vocal music from the Arab world to Iran and India, accompanying instruments seek to imitate the nuances of the voice, often repeating melodic phrases or acting as bridges between stanzas. The music of Erdal Erzincan and Kayhan Kalhor is intensely spiritual and emotional; it is like a prayer. It seeks to bring the listener into its trance-like realm by interweaving ecstatic rhythms with sensual melodic phrases.

The Instruments:

Kamancheh

The kamancheh or spike fiddle, the ancient bowed string instrument of Iran, is the ancestor to most bowed instruments throughout Asia and Europe. It has a small hollowed belly made of walnut or mulberry wood with a thin stretched skin covering and a conical shaped neck. The modern kamancheh has four strings, generally tuned in fourths or fifths, and is held vertically.

Baglama

If a single instrument were to represent Anatolian folk music it would be the baglama, a lute also known by the generic term saz, which literally means “instrument.” The baglama, used in religious ceremonies as well is folk music, is a pear-shaped plucked lute that comes in various sizes and with varying numbers of strings. The favored instrument of the Alevi has three courses of strings arranged in the order of 2-2-3. It may be tuned in fourths or fifths but there are a number of other tunings. The body of the modern baglama is made of strips of juniper with a spruce sounding board and a kelebek hardwood fingerboard.

Make everyone dance. This is the promise of RAGHS. This unique creation of Shanbehzadeh Ensemble is an encounter between traditional music of southern Iran and electronic music. It draws its resources from its African heritage intertwined with the culture of the sailors in the Persian Gulf region for many centuries, which gave a unique cultural identity in the world.
RAGHS is a project-concept, leading the audience into a psychedelic trance by intoxicating melodies and disjunctions rhythms, of virtuosos Naghib and Saeid Shanbehzade, sublimated by electro sounds created by Michael Red.
Shanbehzade Ensemble is the most well-known music group from Southern Iran. The ensemble has presented the music of Bushehr region since 1991 in a variety of established festivals and theatres around the globe, such as WOMAD and Avignon festivals and The Theatre of the city of Paris. The Ensemble plays a very dynamic music besides many influences: African, Persian, Indian and Arabic music; and within powerful and rich rhythms and melodies which easily lead the audiences to dance or so-called trance.

INsou-UNsou band with Babak Taghikhani (pianist/composer) and Solmaz Peymaei (vocalist) as its founders tries to introduce a form of fusion music in which Iranian elements with their pristine characters cohabit with other musical material ranging from Jazz to Indie-rock, introducing and deciphering Iranian sonar dialect to non-Iranian listeners by re-interpreting it to a more appealing form to international audience. In a recent video for a song called Pendaram-Oost, recorded with the assistance of a grant awarded by FACTOR (The Foundation to Assist Canadian Talent on Records) a contemporary dancie choreographed for this particular song shows the capability of INsou music architecture to be supplemented with other forms of visual arts such as dance. INsou project for Tirgan festival will be a mix of Iranian songs (a number of them accompanied by dancers) as well as a few English songs with very unique Iranian renditions of them by the band. INsou-UNsou core band consists of the piano, vocal, tar, sax, bass, drums andpercussion.

“Rhythm and Vibes” was formed in 2012 in Toronto, as “Nima Ahmadieh” and his sister “Sara” started to play different acoustic arrangements of their favorite songs as a cover duo.
After a while “Siavash Sadrmahdavi”, Nima’s childhood friend who had recently moved to Toronto, joined them and added the elements of RHYTHM to the band.
They began to write their own songs in Persian, which led to the creation of an innovative acoustic blues style. Their first song,“Roya Baazi”, which was a collaboration with great musician Behrouz Bakhtiari was released in September 2014.
They also collaborated on a song “Seda Kon Mara” with Semco Salehi, bass player, which was released in May 2015.
Rhythm and Vibes has performed in a number of events in Toronto.
“We love our fans and hope we can please them more and more with our music and performances”
At Tirgan, Rhythm and Vibes will perform the band’s original songs (in Persian) and some English covers.

Tabriz Azerbaijani Music and Dance Ensemble (TAMDE) was founded in Toronto in 2003. It originally consisted of Dance and Music groups, but recently we have added a Choir group as well. The Music and Dance groups have in recent years expanded in number, in diversity of instruments and dances, as well as, in repertoire. We are a 30-person ensemble.
The TAMDE music group will be performing well-known and beloved classical Azerbaijani instrumental pieces, as well as mixing European classical music played on traditional folk instruments. We will also have several pieces accompanied by a vocalist.
Polad Kashef
Polad is a professional Pianist as well as accordion and qarmon player. He started playing accordion in 1981 and by 1991 he started his professional career, working as a permanent member of the orchestra theatre in Tabriz-Azerbaijan. He simultaneously played Qarmon at Tabriz Culture (Ferheng) Orchestra since 1992 and in 1994 started as a permanent Pianist within Tabriz Radio & Television Azerbaijani Ensemble.
He has performed in Turkey (Ankara, Istanbul) and Republic of Azerbaijan (Baku and Nakhchivan ). He immigrated to Canada in 2013.
Mohammad Aman
Mohammad is from Tabriz – Iran. He has been a Tar player and teacher since 1984 as well as a Music theory and choir instructor since 1994. He was the Founder and music leader of Tabriz Music Ensemble in Toronto since 2002 while being the founder, teacher and conductor of Iran Choir in University of Toronto 2004
Mohammad is a music graduate of National Conservatoire of Azerbaijan specializing in Tar (2012). He has had over 150 live and recorded performances in Azerbaijan, Iran, Canada, U.S.A, Japan, Turkey and Europe. And he has also performed in venues and TV programs like "House of Mugham", AZ TV, Space TV, Ictimai TV and ATV in Baku and "CBC Radio Studio" and "Mel Lastman square" in Toronto and"Vahdat Hall" in Tehran
He is the inventor of mechanical fine-tune pegs (manufactured in Germany by Wittner) for 7 middle-eastern instruments 2012
Mokhtar Noubary
Mokhtar was born in Tabriz, in East Azerbaijan. Mokhtar was raised in a family who loved Azerbaijani music and dance. When he was 5 years old, he started playing Naqara and has been playing for numerous groups and ensembles in Azerbaijan.
Mokhtar has been involved in Azerbaijani cultural activities and events in Canada since the year 2000 and he is a founding member of TAMDE (Tabriz Azerbaijani Music & Dance Ensemble). Mokhtar has shared the stage with many renowned artists over his career. He is one of the only Naqara players in Canada and as such has performed in countless concerts, festivals, celebrations, consular functions, etc. He is interested in mixing folk and classical instruments, as well as discovering new rhythms from world music. Mokhtar has a keen ear for rhythm, and is constantly learning and practicing. He is continuously contributing towards promoting Azerbaijan’s rich culture in Canada, his current home.
Arta Kashef
Arta is a grade 10 high school student and the youngest member of TAMDE’s music group. He has been playing the piano since 2009 and the Saxophone since 2013. Arta has also been a member of Aurora High School’s symphonic band as a Saxophone player for 2 years. Arta has been the music group’s keyboard player for 3 years.
He has volunteered as synthesizer player for refugee day 2014 and 2015 as well as for Azerbaijan Day 2015. He also had the pleasure of contributing to his high school’s music competition in Washington where they placed second.
Salar Noubary
Salar was born in Tabriz, Iran. He started playing music at the age of six on the Darbuka. He began performing in shows and events at the age of nine playing Darbuka, Naqara and Zarb. Since then he has been engaged in many concerts and large events with singers from around the world as well as travelling and performing as a musician across Canada and the US. He is a multi-talented artist and plays drums, percussion, the piano and keyboard and is the IT Manager for TAMDE.
He has been with TAMDE since 2003 as dancer, musician, stage manager, sound technician, and technical support. Salar is an active member and is currently responsible for photos and website production of TAMDE.
Aygun Mammadova
Aygun is a guest vocalist with TAMDE. Aygun graduated from the vocalist program in the Baku School of Music in 1991. She was a part of Efser Javanshirov’s chilren’s choir. She graduated from the Baku music university in 1996. After graduation she worked as lead soloist actress in musical theatre. She has been taught by many famous musicians and teachers such as Faig Zohrabov. Shefige Memmedova. Hesen Turabov. Yashar Nuri. Jahangir Zeynalov. Aygun is now a beloved Azerbaijani singer in Toronto, where she has had numerous performances.
Sarah Thawer
Sarah is a guest percussionist for TAMDE. She is also a drummer, vocalist and pianist based in Toronto, Canada. She is a freelance musician, playing with various bands. She is a self- taught drummer and percussionist, and specializes in playing drums, latin percussion: congas, bongos and timbale, North and South Indian percussion: tabla, kanjira, dholak, dhol and others, flamenco cajon and the list goes on. She also plays the piano (she completed grade 9 in the Royal Conservatory of Music program), guitar and violin and dabbles in singing, composing, song-writing and production. The inception of Persis as an idea dates to 1999, but it took well over 10 years before the band actually came into life. It was a mutual understanding of the musical elements, as well as similarity of view points between Pouya and Mehran , that made this long awaited dream a possibility. Their first album, “Melodious Silence “, is selectively representing different styles of Rock music, in order to namely probe and stimulate the listener’s taste.
