Marc Glassman
Cinema
Marc Glassman is an arts journalist, film programmer, teacher, bookseller and cultural impresario. The recipient of the Toronto Arts Award in literature in 2000 and the Tom Berner Prize for support of independent filmmaking in 2003, he is an Adjunct Professor at Ryerson University’s Masters of Fine Arts in Documentary Media programme, the Artistic Director of the Pages Festival and Pages UnBound: the series (formerlyThis Is Not A Reading Series) a multi-disciplinary project that explores the creative process in literature.
He has been the Editor-in-chief of POV (Point of View), Canada’s leading periodical on documentary culture since 2001 and Montage, the Directors Guild of Canada’s national magazine since 2002. Previously, he was the associate editor of Take One magazine from 1989-2001. He reviews film every week for Classical 96.3 FM.
Marc was the first film programmer for the Hot Docs International Documentary Festival and Reel Canada: Our films in our schools. He programmed the National Film Board's Toronto theatre, the John Spotton Cinema, from 1991-1996. Marc was the summer film programmer for Harbourfront Centre from 1987-2003; among other projects, he picked films for the Downtown Jazz Festival, Peter Gabriel’s WOMAD and was one of the initiators of the still-popular Free Flicks series. For the Ottawa International Animation Festival, Marc was a curator, jury selection member and part of the advisory board. Currently, he is a programmer for the Planet in Focus environmental film festival.
He co-authored the major book on internationally acclaimed animator Paul Driessen, Images and Reflexions, co-authored and co-editedForbidden Films: the Filmmaker and Human Rights, edited Atom Egoyan’s book Speaking Parts and Mike Hoolboom’s Fringe Film in Canadaand has contributed articles to the Canadian Film Institute’s monographs on such independent directors as Gariné Torossian and Ingrid Veninger. He has written for numerous publications including Playback, Fuse, Borderlines, Descant, Parachute and Cinema Scope.
Marc is a founder and advisor to the Images Festival. He was a member of the Cinematheque Ontario’s Advisory Board for 20 years until it changed its name and governance model to become TIFF Cinematheque. Marc was the long-time proprietor of Pages, an award-winning Canadian independent bookshop for thirty years, 1979-2009 and headed up the Queen Street West Business Improvement Association from 2008-2011.
