In this cooking demonstration, you will have a chance to learn from Najmieh Batmanglij, the guru of Persian cooking. According to Bonni Benwick of the Washington Post, "Chefs across the country are at the forefront of Najmieh’s fan base. They know what’s good, and they are inspired by the ingredients and techniques she brings to the table." Najmieh will demonstrate some classic, seasonal Persian dishes, namely

Yogurt, Cucumber and Rose Petal Dip (Mast-o khiar)
Eggplant Khoresh (Khoresh-e bademjan)
Saffron-Flavored Steamed Rice with Golden Crust (Chelow)
Cheese, Walnut, and Herb Dip (Doymaj)

*Mrs Batmanglij will be answering questions after the demonstrations and signing her award-winning cookbook, Food of Life: Ancient Persian and Modern Iranian Cooking and Ceremonies, which will be available for sale at the festival and at the event.

Artist Bios:

Hailed as “The guru of Persian cuisine” by The Washington Post, Najmieh Batmanglij has spent the past 30 years cooking, traveling, and adapting authentic Iranian recipes to the tastes and techniques of western cuisines. The 25th Anniversary Edition of her book “Food of Life: Ancient Persian and Modern Iranian Cooking and Ceremonies ” was called "this summer's (2011) most coveted tome" by Vogue. Her Silk Road Cooking: “A Vegetarian Journey” was selected as “One of the 10 best vegetarian cookbooks of the year” by the New York Times; and her “From Persia to Napa: Wine at the Persian Table” won the 2007 Gourmand Cookbook Award for the world’s best wine history book . She is a member of Les Dames d’Escoffier and lives in Washington, DC, where she teaches Iranian and Silk Road cooking. As well, she provides consultations for restaurants around the world. Her most recent book is “ Happy Nowruz: Cooking with Children to Celebrate the Persian New Year .” At 2013 Tirgan Festival, Najmieh will demonstrate some classic, gourmet Iranian cuisines, including the secrets of using saffron and rose water in Iranian cooking.

Araz Nayeb Pashayee will present highly educational and entertaining Daf workshop at a beginner level to music enthusiasts of all ages (in English). The workshop will contain the following:
1)     Short group performance (by himself, and students)
2)     Theory part:
- Daf brief evolutionary history
- What is Daf made of?
- Introduction of some common rhythmic patterns and styles on Daf
3)     Practical part (with participation of volunteering audience):
- How to hold the Daf
- Most basic strokes used in Daf playing: Tom, Mianeh and Bak
- Playing one or two simple rhythmic patterns in which everyone has a chance to get involved either by playing them on the drum (using the basic strokes learned) or by clapping.
