Arash the Archer is an operatic narration of one of the most well known Iranian myths which has captivated many with its universal values such as redemption, hope and sacrifice. ICOT created a new version of the story directed by Siavash Shabanpour.Arash the Archer is a musical collage incorporating operatic singing, orchestral music, theatrical elements, video and stage design.

Kamelia Dara
Kamelia is a prodigy of today's Persian Opera. Her voice has a warm timbre and a dark color. Born to a musically inclined family, she discovered her passion for singing at the tender age of five and with her father's guidance. Kamelia took her first music and voice lessons with Mrs. Mansoore Ghasri in Iran. In her teenage years, she performed and sang as a soloist in several musical halls and cultural centers in Tehran and Paris. Kamelia left Iran in 2002 to pursue her studies in Austria where she was accepted at the Graz Johann-Joseph-Fux Conservatory to study under the guidance of Prof. Schmaranz. She attended Graz University of Music and Dramatic Arts with Prof. Kania in 2003 and continuing her studies with Prof. Tom Sol. In 2010, she graduated with a Master degree in vocal studies. She attended master classes with Barbara Boney in France in 2005 and with Gabriele Lechner in Graz in 2009. In summer 2009, Kamelia won a scholarship from the State of Styria to participate in AIMS (American Institute of Musical Studies). She has participated in various opera projects and concerts in Graz and Vienna in Austria, Cadogan Hall in London, Key Meek Centre and Centennial Theatre in Vancouver, Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco and in Paris. Her wide-ranging repertoire has repeatedly led her to Masses. Like "Great C Minor "Mass (Hyden), "B Major" and "G Major" Masses (Schubert), f Moll Mass (Bruckner), “A Major Mass” (Leopold Mozart), “C Major Masses” Fux. Kamelia has had artistic collaboration with conductors Erwin Ortner, Nikolaus Harnoncourt (Styriarte), and Daniel Harding accompanied by the Chamber Orchestra of Europe. She sang in the role of Fox in the opera " The Cunning Little Vixen" by Leos Janacek in Autumn 2009, the role of Lauretta in the Opera "Giannis Chichi" from Giacomo Puccini in Winter 2010 and in MUMUTH, Music Theater in Graz . She sang The role of MIMI in the Opera, La Bohem from Puccini in Summer 2011 and participated in various concerts including Puccini Gala, Robert Solz Gala and Franz Lehar Concert in 2012 and 2013. Kamelia won the third prize in Oscar Straus singing competition in Vienna in 2012.

Keyan Emami
Keyan Emami is currently pursuing his Doctorate of Music in Composition at the University of Toronto under the supervision of Professors Alexander Rapoport and Norbert Palej. Keyan holds a Master’s degree in Music Composition from Tehran University of Art. He is an accomplished composer, with a wide variety of instrumental works including symphonic, chamber, and solo pieces, as well as music for theatre productions, and theme music for films and television. He has worked as a Teaching Assistant at the Faculty of Music of the University of Toronto, and as a University Educator at the University of Art, Azad University, and the Tehran Conservatory of Music. His well received Persian translation of the book Form and Design by Roy Bennett was published in 2009. Keyan is also one of the co-founders of Iranian-Canadian Composers of Toronto (ICOT), which has created new works and performed them in different cities in Ontario and Quebec.

Pouya Hamidi
Pouya Hamidi had his first lessons in classical piano as a small child in Iran. Since coming to Canada he has attended the Young Artist Performance Academy at The Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM), completed the Claude Watson Arts Diploma, a Bachelor of Piano Performance and a Bachelor of Music in Composition at the University of Toronto (UofT). He was awarded the Associate of the Royal Conservatory Certificate in piano performance, the highest level awarded by the RCM. Pouya has also won competitions such as the Canadian Music Competition, Kiwanis Music Competition, and best performance and composition at the Markham Music Festival. Jamie Parker (Gryphon Trio), Ka Nin Chan, Christos Hatzis, and Alexander Rapoport were among his professors at the UofT, where several scholarships also supported his studies. Pouya’s other musical interests include film scoring and employing diverse instrumentations including Persian traditional instruments. Ladom Ensemble and Sacred Balance are Pouya’s other performance projects, a Persian/Balkan classical ensemble and electronic rock band respectively. Pouya is currently pursuing the Master of Music program in Sound Recording at McGill University in Montreal.

Maziar Heidari
Maziar started Piano with the famous piano professor Ardeshir Rohani, when he was 5. He received his bachelor’s in Industrial Engineering and completed composition lessons with Farhad Fakhreddini. Maziar studied masters of composition at the ”Art University of Tehran” with well-known musicians such as: Ahmad Pejman, Sharif Lotfi, Hossein Dehlavi, Mostafa Pourtorab, Siavash Beizaii, Tolib Shakhidi (Moscow Conservatoire), Khayam Mirzazadeh (Baku Conservatoire) and graduated with the first rating degree; where he was a Piano and Orchestration Tutor for almost 6 years. For more than 10 years, he was a composer, assistant conductor and pianist in Iran National Music Orchestra. He has many great pieces in forms of orchestral, ensemble, vocal, etc. In 2006 he was awarded as best composer in Iranian Music Festival. In Summer 2011 he accepted the Tirgan Festival Award for his conducting of Pardis Orchestra at the Opening Ceremony at Toronto’s Harbour Front Center.He is also one of the co-founders of the successful Iranian classical music group named “ICOT” (Iranian-Canadian Composer of Toronto) which has performed great concerts around Canada . He is currently studying Masters of Orchestral Conducting at UofT, where he got achance to study under the supervision of David Briskin (Director of Orchestral Studies, Conductor at UofT Symphony Orchestra and the National Ballet of Canada), and David Bowser (The director and conductor of NYCO Symphony Orchestra), Gary Kulesha (Composer), Victor Feldbrill (founder of TSYO and Conductor). Maziar works as an Assistant Conductor at the University of Toronto Symphony Orchestra (UTSO), at Educational section of Toronto Symphony Orchestra (TSO), as a pianist of Orchestra Toronto (OT) and freelance tutor, pianist, composer and conductor.

Afarin Mansouri
Afarin Mansouri Tehrani is the co-founder of "ICOT" - Iranian-Canadian Composers of Toronto, an associate composer of Canadian Music Centre, and an advisory committee member for North York Arts (an initiative of Toronto Arts Foundation). She is also a PhD candidate at York University, teaching while researching on Persian Opera and other story telling genres. Her compositions cover a variety of styles and genres from concert music and chamber works, to electronic music, multimedia and music for films and animations. Her music is like a bridge, linking her Iranian eastern background to her western academic training. Afarin is the winner of the prestigious award of 24th International Fajr music Festival Composition Competition in 2009 for her work "The fallen soldier" written fororchestra and choir. She is among the composers who write bilingual vocal pieces in both Persian and English Languages and using Daf (the Persian drum) with western orchestra. Her work “Horse and Fire” for 2 pianos was the winner of piano duo competition in 2010. Her work, “Persian Abstract,” was selected for Canadian Women Composers program premiered by San Augustine Duo in 2010. She has collaborated with festivals and ensembles such as Toronto Nuit Blanceh, KW Open Ears Festival, Windago, TorQ Percussion Ensemble, Iranian Heritage at Royal Ontario Museum and Iranian Association of Waterloo. Afarin has been teaching piano to children for more than 15 years, providing her students high quality instructions together with energetic motivation. She has spread the love of music making to many families. She sincerely believes in the value of early childhood music education and runs her own program, MUSIC NEST.

Touka Neyestani
Touka Neyestani was born in Shahrood, Iran in 1960. He is a well known caricaturist and architect. His father, Manouchehr Neyestani was a poet and his brother Mana is also a caricaturist. He graduated fom the Science and Industry University in Tehran majoring in architecture in 1987. His professional career as a cartoonist and caricaturist began in 1979 in the " Book of Friday" weekly under the supervision of Ahmad Shamloo. Since then, Touka has collaborated with more than 50 publications, and has also been selected twice as the best Cartoonist by the Iranian Press Festival. He immigrated to Canada in 2011, and now resides in Toronto.

Siavash Shabanpour
Siavash Shabanpour was born in Tehran, Iran. He began writing poetry in his late teens. His poetry was published in major student-run publications in Iran, as well as in internationally known online journals. While a law student at Tehran University, he became interested in theatre studies. Upon his immigration to Canada in 2003 he began to study theatre at York University. By the time he graduated in 2011 he had directed three successful productions. He has since been working as a theatre director in Toronto. Past directing work includes Apartment 812, The Story of the Panda Bears Told by a Saxophonist Who Has a Girlfriend In Frankfurt, When It All Falls Down, and Horses at the Window. He was also the assistant director and actor in a York University production of Dr. Faustus (Dir: Alecsandar Luka). As an actor he has played supporting roles in the two Canadian feature films The Bright Side of the Moon (Dir: Farhad Ahi) and Mitra (Dir: Mazdak Taebi). He is currently in the process of publishing his poetry and his translation of Peter Brook’s Conference of the Birds from English to Persian.

Saman Shahi
Saman finished his Masters of Music in Composition from the University of Toronto in 2012, where he also received his Bachelor’s degree with honors in Composition and Piano Performance in 2010. His instructors include Gary Kulesha, Sasha Rapoport, Norbert Palej and Roger Bergs, and for shorter periods Heather Schmidt, Ray Murray Schaffer, Goerge Tsontakis and Christos Hatzis. Saman is a professional member of the Canadian League of Composers as well as SOCAN foundation His music has been read and performed by many ensembles and renowned performers across Canada and the United States as well as France and Germany. His Music has also been broadcast on BBC Persian and the CBC (Podcast), as well as Radio Sedaye Toronto in 2013. Saman is one of the co-founders of ICOT [Iranian Composers of Toronto] (http:// www.icot.ca). He also recently served as the composer in residence for the North Dale Concert Band, where he composed and conducted a piece for a large wind ensemble in the fall of 2012. He was also one of the composers of the sensational “Rob Ford: an Operatic Life” which was premiered last January 2012 in the Macmillan Theatre. He is the recipient of many awards including the 2012 CLC/CMC mentorship project in Ontario, as well as the Minister of Culture and Sports' letter of acknowledgements for his artistic and cultural activities in 2012. Saman is also active as a pianist, conductor and educator.

Artist Bios:

Rana Mansour
Never having been to Iran, this American-born Iranian is nonetheless influenced by her heritage, and she expresses this by uniting musical elements from both the East and the West. This unique infusion has resulted in some very exciting opportunities for Rana. The rising star was recently seen performing her original song entitled “No Place Like Home” on the last few episodes on Bravo TV’s hit show The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills. Her first Persian hit, called “Shohare Pooldaar” (Rich Husband) was the highlight performance for Voice of America’s Nowruz program in March of 2012, racking up tens of thousands of internet plays and views in a matter of weeks. Her debut Persian music video, “Baroon”, was released internationally on RadioJavan and TMTV gaining her both popularity and thousands of fans in Iran. Aside from her recent success, Rana’s background is also nothing short of impressive. At 3, she was already picking notes out on the piano and singing along to Hayedeh, a Persian pop vocal icon. At 6, she began formal piano instruction with one of Iran’s masters of music, Golnoush Khaleghi. In 2005, Rana became a finalist of the VH1 ‘Song of the Year’ competition, very soon after earning her Bachelor’s in Music with Honors at the acclaimed Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. Currently, Rana lives in Los Angeles where she is working with producer Erwin Khachikian on releasing her upcoming songs.

Erwin Khachikian and Karmandan
Erwin Khachikian was born in Tehran, Iran and moved to the USA when he was 13 years old. In Farsi, Karmandan translates to blue-collar office workers. The songs are written and produced by Erwin Khachikian, an Armenian born in Iran and raised in America. Performed in Farsi, English, and Armenian, Karmandan’s song subject-matter reflects modern life issues and concerns - from the social pressures for a media-accepted look to trying to understand others’ differences to respect one another for a better place for all to live. The band has performed and appeared on nationally acclaimed networks such as BBC numerous times, and they have performed sold out shows and festivals both in and outside of the USA. Since the official release of their debut album, their unique stage look and videos have grabbed the attention of many. In this theatrical 4-piece band, the members wear different costumes while on stage. The costumes used in the past, such as a $100 bill outfit, a bearded old jeweler, a plastic surgeon, a war sergeant, a school nerd, and a guy dressed as a girl, all bring some clever and tasteful comical aspects to Karmandan’s live show. Karmandan continues to look for opportunities to express their artistic work in other countries and hopes for a day when they can perform in Iran.

This concert is an initiatory journey into various traditions and periods of Persian music. Based on the latest musical researches, Sepideh Raissadat, KiyaTabassian and their colleagues will revisit some of the most interesting and most beautiful of rediscovered treasures of the Persian classical music from Safavid period. This repertoire sheds light on Persian Magham music (prior to the Dastgâh system) and rebuilds the broken bridges with our contemporary repertoire of Radif. Sepideh Raissadat
Persian classical vocalist and musician Sepideh Raissadat recorded her first album at the age of 18 with Master Parviz Meshkatian. To her credit, Sepideh was the first female vocalist to have a solo public performance in Iran, in 2000. With such a dynamic beginning, and having studied with many of the musical greats - such as Parisa, Parviz Meshkatian and Mohammad-Reza Lotfi - Sepideh continued her musical studies at the University of Bologna, in Italy. This led to numerous performances in Europe, notably with Italian musicians Franco Battiato, Andrea Parodi and Ensemble Maraghi. She has since garnered many invitations by prestigious institutions, including UNESCO, the Vatican and international media such as BBC and RAI. With three critically acclaimed CDs of her own and guest appearances on numerous albums, she is currently based in Toronto, continuing her academic studies in Ethnomusicology at the University of Toronto.

Tinoush Bahrami
Tinoush Bahrami is a Tar and Se-tar solo artist and composer born in 1966 in Tehran. He has studied under the grand masters of Persian traditional music and his style of playing known to have his own signature. He has performed with some of the best Iranian musicians such as Hosain Alizade and Parviz Meshkatian in Vahdat hall Tehran before moving to London where he lives, teaches and performs now. Tinoush is a graduate of Goldsmiths College, Tehran University and Tehran conservatoire. He was the Radif teacher of Sureh University and Tehran conservatoire, and its traditional ensemble’s leader. Lately he has created a new musical concept based on which he calls “Iranian Magham”; a collaboration of Iran’s regional musical modes and composed several pieces in this concept and traditional styles.

Naghmeh Farahmand
Naghmeh Farahmand the daughter of a leading master percussionist Mahmoud Farahmand has performed with many well-known ensembles in Iran and festivals around the world, Europe, Asia and North America while collaborating with Iranian TV for more than a decade. In 2010, she moved to Canada and released her solo percussion CD “Unbound” while collaborating with top performers of world music. She has had vast experience teaching at different institutes of music and has also conducted workshops throughout the world. She is also skill-full in other world percussion such as darbuka, djembe, udu, cajon and drums, and is the founder of Sharghi percussion ensemble.

Sardar Mohammadjani
Sardar Mohammadjani born in 1978 in a Kurdish region of Iran chose Tar as his primary musical instrument at the age of 10. In 1997 he left his city of birth, Mahabad, to pursue his passion in music by studying at the Fine Arts University of Tehran, where he also worked in the National Media of Iran. While studying under the supervision of esteemed musicians Mr. Daryosh Talaei and Darvish Reza Monazami, he took an interest in playing Oud (Lute). Sardar studied Ethnomusicology at the University of Paris. During his stay in Paris he collaborated with the Badila band and the institute Jeunesse Musicales de France (JMF).Sardar is currently continuing his professional career in Toronto.

Ajam is a London based band that formed in early 2010. Ajam's music tries to bring the epic and soulful spirit of the native music of Iran to a new generation. Hamed Nikpay
A fusion vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, and songwriter, Hamed Nikpay has been a pioneering & experimental artist for over a decade. His music transcends all boundariesand genres, and is an artful transformation of classical Persian melodies to soulful Flamenco, mystical fusion of transcendental Sufi sounds with smooth jazz and masterly transition of folkloric Persian ballads to Latin beats, all laced with eloquent lyrics by revered Persian poets, ancient & contemporary, incisively chosen by him. He writes hisown songs, and often collaborates with musicians of different genres for arrangement and harmonization. He produces profusely and his ingenuity as a visionary artist is hailed by audiences and critics alike. Hamed was one of the first and few artists who showed his solidarity with the Iranian men and women who put their lives on the harm’s way for freedom and democracy during the Green Revolution. The song entitled “The Owner of this Land—Maaleke eenKhaak” written and performed by him for this occasion, has received much popularity forits originality and its soulful rendition.
Hamed's passionate live performances, and electrifying voice, have mesmerized audiences throughout the world and earned him the reputation of one of "Iran's best young vocalists".He has produced 4 albums: "Solo Passage", "All Is Calm", "Spellbound" and just released the ground breaking & quintessential fusion album "Reaching You".

Farzin Farhadi
A Saxophonist by training, Farzin is a multi-talented songwriter & producer who has worked in diversegenres for more than two decades. His melodic tunes influenced by his partiality to jazz, and his innate affinity for Persian music, are innovative, inspiring and rapturous. His jazz/world album, “My World” was considered for a Grammy nomination & his last album, “The Beloved is Here” an interpretative collection of songs based on the poetry of Rumi, featured some of the most acclaimed Iranian singers. He has had numerous performances throughout the world, and has produced multiple albums with some of the legendary artists of Persian music, includingHamed Nikpay’s last two albums “Spellbound”, and “Reaching You” which was just released.

Satnam Ramgotra
A Canadian born & raised percussionist, Satnam has formal training on both drum, and Indian classical Tabla.He has performed as guest artists and toured with world-renowned artists, including Sting, Seal, & Melisa Etheridge, to mention a few. His credits also include performing on the “Tonight Show” and “The Rosie O’Donnell Show”, “CBS Morning Show”, “The Radio Music Awards”, and many others. Satnam’s affiliation with the motion picture industry includes working with A-List film composers. He can be heard in major pictures such as “Hancock”, “Black Hawk down”, “John Q”, “Zoolander”, “Kite Runner”, “Charlie Wilson’s War”, “A Bridge To Terebithia”, and most recently “Angels & Demons,” “Inception”, and “Sherlock Holmes”.

Hussain Jiffry
Born and raised in Colombo, Sri Lanka, Hussain grew up surrounded by diverse traditional music of his country, as well as pop, jazz, & R & B. He started singing in school choirs at 10, took up piano at 12 and electric bass at 17. After performing in Europe for eight years, he moved to LA & studied music at the music Institute in Hollywood. He is one of the most sought after bassists in LA, and has performed and toured with the A-list music industry elite including Malisa Manchester, Yanni, Bobby Brown, Michael Bolton, Whitney Houston, Phoebe Snow, Gloria Gaynor, Carol King, Chaka Khan, and a slew of other international stars.

Alfredo Cáceres
Born in Guatemala City, Alfredo lived in Seville, Spain where he studied with multiple renowned master Flamenco guitarists, and legendary Flamenco dancer and percussionist Manolo San Lúcar. He has written, arranged and co-produced multiple albums and has collaborated on more than 50 recordings including a 2009 Grammy nominated album. He performs in diverse genres ranging from Flamenco, Jazz, Brazilian, & Salsa to Pop, Latin and recently Persian/World music in collaboration with Hamed. He is much sought after and has performed with a large number of diverse international artists. His new album “K’atun” was released in 2012, and he co-producedHamed Nikpay’s new album “Reaching You”

Solmaz and Babak’s music is mainly focused on the interaction with and fusion of Iranian(mostly traditional and folk) and non-Iranian materials to form a brand new rendition of what they call a lifetime search for sounds in their instruments.
The result is a deep oriental sound that would satisfythe cravings of noble and trained ears, which enjoy the layers of complexity, rather than the familiar perpetuating monophonic tunes that for years have been held sacred.
Moreover they aim to fabricate non-Iranian music which is played or spiced with purely Iranian instruments, textures and vocal variations that is best performed by a heart and soul born in and belonging to Iran, and formed with Iranian modes and magham.
Persian-language songs will be an emulsion of harmonies, in particular for non-Iranian audience. English songs performed are transfiguredand enriched by the Iranian vocalist with her own unique touch and accents, reflecting eastern ideas.

The pieces that will be performed are a unique selection of melodies based on the vocal repertoire of Kurdistan, Garmiyan region. The melodies will be improvised by Kamanche and the language of the lyrics is Kalhori.
Garmyan, an area on the western border of Iran, is the origin of old Iranian and Iraqi Kurdish melodies. This region is a vast area located in the western part of Kermanshah province, includes the city of Qasr e Shirin and continues to the Xaneqin district in Iraqi Kurdistan. Kurdish people in these areas retain their rich culture and the legacy of their ancient ancestors and speak the so-called “Kalhori” dialect, a version of south Kurdish dialect in Iran.
Well known melodies originated from Garmyan mainly include two parts. A free rhythmic vocal piece called Maqam which formerly was sung without any instrumental accompaniment and a rhythmic part that consists of easily understandable lyrics derived from the tonality of the same songs. These melodies were accompanied by Tanbour (Kurdish Lute), Narme Nay, Zorna, Daf (Frame Drum) and other Kurdish percussion instruments and have been passed down orally through the generations.
