A collection of short films by Shirin Neshat will be screened.
Neshat’s provocative photographs, videos and multimedia installations have resonated with the curators of many major international art exhibitions, including the XLVIII Venice Biennale, where she won the top prize in 1999. Her ﬁrst feature ﬁlm, Women Without Men, tells the stories of four women struggling to escape oppression in Tehran. It won her the Silver Lion for best director at the 2010 Venice Film Festival. "Walk into a Shirin Neshat film installation and the images seize you: big, memorable, physically beautiful, exploring the role of women in Islamic society in terms of cinematic poetry, so that even the stifling chador becomes powerfully expressive." The New York Times, July 15, 2002. The work of Neshat addresses the social, political and psychological dimensions of women experience in contemporary Islamic societies.

Shirin Neshat is among the best-known Iranian artists in the Western world. She has lived in the United States, in self-imposed exile from her native Iran, for most of her adult life. This experience, of being caught between two cultures, dominates Neshat’s creative work: each of her pieces offers a glimpse into the complex social, religious and political realities that shape her identity—and the identities of Muslim women worldwide. Shirin Neshat was born in Qazvin, Iran, and left the country, at about the time that the Iranian Revolution occurred, to study art in the United States at 17; she graduated from the University of California, Berkeley with an MFA in 1982. When she returned to her home country in 1990, she found it barely recognizable from the Iran before the 1979 Revolution, a shocking experience that incited the meditations on memory, loss, and contemporary life in Iran that are central to her work. Her Women of Allah series, created in the mid-1990s, introduced the hallmark themes of her pieces through which she examines conditions of male, female, public, private, religious, political, and secular identities in both Iranian and Western cultures. Her videos, installations, and photographs have received great critical acclaim outside of Iran. Her work has been exhibited at the Venice Biennale, the Istanbul and Johannesburg Biennials, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, and the Tate Gallery in London, among other institutions. Neshat currently lives and works in New York. When Neshat first came to use film, she was influenced by the work of Iranian director Abbas Kiarostami. Neshat's recognition became more international in 1999, when she won the International Award of the XLVIII Venice Biennale with Turbulent and Rapture, a project involving almost 250 extras and produced by the Galerie Jérôme de Noirmont which met with critical and public success after its worldwide avant-première at the Art Institute of Chicago in May 1999. In 2009 she won the Silver Lion for best director at the 66th Venice Film Festival for her directional debut Women Without Men, based on Shahrnush Parsipur's novel of the same name. Since 2000 Neshat has also participated in film festivals, including the Telluride Film Festival (2000), Chicago International Film Festival (2001), San Francisco International Film Festival (2001), Locarno International Film Festival (2002), Tribeca Film Festival (2003), Sundance Film Festival (2003), and Cannes Film Festival (2008). In 2013 she will be a member of the jury at the 63rd Berlin International Film Festival.

This is a true story of Dr. Ata Safavi. In 1947, at the age of 20, Safavi, a leftist activist in Iran was threatened by (Mohammad Reza) Shah's agents with exile to a remote town in south of Iran. Thus, he decided to escape to the Soviet Union, envisioned by many Iranians as the Communists' paradise. For his attempted illegal entry into the Soviet Union, he was immediately captured and sentenced to two years in prison, where he was obliged to work in a brick works factory. Later KGB agents took him for additional investigations and convicted him for espionage for imperialism to spend twenty five years in a prison in Magadan, a town located in northeastern Russia and a part of Siberia, While most of his three thousands fellow prisoners died or committed suicide, Ata decided to fight for his right to live. This is the story of his best years spent in the most inhuman circumstances.
At Tirgan 2013 A Survivor from Magadan will be screened followed by a Q&A session with the director.

“The King of Black,” a 24-minute film is an adaptation of a chapter of the Haft Paykar, the romantic epic of the 12th century, by Nizami of Ganja. Haft Paykar or Seven Beauties is an allegorical romance, which takes self-knowledge as the essential path to human enlightenment as its central theme.
Over the past few years, Azari has successfully taken historical and traditional work from the past and merging it with a contemporary context. In both “The Day of the Last Judgment” (2009) and Untitled (2012) videos, Azari uses Persian miniature and coffee house paintings as the backdrop for contemporary scenes of conflict, war and political horrors.
In his new one-channel video projection, Azari continues to merge the past with the present. The vivid and richly colored film features live action set on a background of classical Persian miniature paintings. Additionally, aspects such as the characters’ customs and mannerisms are treated in contemporary times while the painted background depicts the historical times. Conceptually, this merging of present and past bridges the historical gap and makes the Twelfth-Century poem resonate in modern times.
Suad Garayeva writes in the catalogue essay, “The film depicting human imperfection is layered with meaning in the best of Eastern Sufi traditions. The striving for an ideal is juxtaposed with the Western attraction to Exoticism, as the scenes reference both the Islamic conception of Heaven and the nineteenth-century French Orientalist paintings of harems. Thus, Azari reconstructs the persisting historical prejudices and raises awareness of those who tried to subvert those very preconceptions as early as eight hundred years ago. Feeling liberated from the boundaries imposed on the artist by the film industry in the medium of video art, Azari at the same time breaches the thresholds of painting and film, by treating his projection screens as stand-alone canvases.”
