Love Stories of the Shahnameh” is based on epic poems from Ferdowsi’s Shahnameh (“Book of Kings” – Iranian National Epic), one of the masterpieces of Persian literature, retelling the tales of “Shirin & Khosrow”, “Bahram & Arezoo” and “Sohrab & Gordafarid”. This program is designed and staged in the epic storytelling manner known as naqqali, combined with music and dance. It is performed in seven scenes of specially choreographed dances accompanied by five recitations of selected poems from the Shahnameh. Shahrokh Moshkin Ghalam
Shahrokh Moshkin Ghalam graduated from the University of Paris VIII with a degree in History of Art and Theatre. He specializes in Middle Eastern folklore and mystical dance and has a deep interest in Indian, Indonesian and Flamenco dances. Shahrokh joined the renowned Theatre du Soleil in 1991, where he played lead roles in Ariane Mnouchkine’s productions of “Tartuffe” “La ville parjure” and “Les Atrides”. In 1997 he established the Nakissa Dance Company and created: “A Persian Night’s Dream”, “The Route of Orient”, “Nostalgia or Ghassedak”, “The Seven Pavilion of Love” (Haft Peykar), “Omar Khayam,” “Les Danses Mythologiques,” “Mani the Bouddha of Light,” “Rumi Le brûlé” and coming soon: “Hafez”. Meanwhile, he has also been playing in: “Twelfth Night” by Shakespeare, directed by Christophe Rauck; “Romeo and Juliette”, directed by Lionel Briand; “The Baccantes” by Euripide, directed by Usevio Lazaro; “Soldier’s Tale” by Strawinsky and “La Diva D’Auschwitz”, directed by Antoine Campo; “A Streetcar Named Desire” by Tennessee Williams directed by Phillip Adrian; “Kidnapping at the Seraglio” by Mozart directed by Jérome Deschamps and Macha Makeïef. He directed “Zohreh va Manouchehr” (Venus and Adonis) by Shakespeare in Persian; “Mardha va Chiz” (Men and the Thing); and “Kafané Siah” (Black Shroud). Since January 2005 he has been an official member of the “Comédie Fançaise” (the house of Molière) playing in: “Le Sicilien” by Lully-Molière, directed by Jean- Marie Villégier; “La Maison Des Morts” by Philippe Minyana, directed by Robert Cantarella; “Pedro et Le Commandeur” by Felix Lope de Vega, directed by Omar Porras.

Karine Gonzalez
Karine Gonzalez is a multifaceted artist. After studying piano, music theory and ballet dance for over ten years, she naturally found her passion in Flamenco; her ideal language to express herself artistically, especially as it originates from her roots in Spain. She studied Spanish literature and wrote her master's thesis on Flamenco and called it “My Flamenco Movements". Since 1998, she has choreographed and performed with a large variety of productions and world-famous artists, including a Sufi solo performance in Tony Gatlif's film "Vengo" beside Tomatito, Antonio Canales and Sheikh Ahmad Al Tuni, while having worked for two years with the world famous school of flamenco of Madrid under the leadership of Antonio Reyes (professor and dancer of flamenco, Nacional Ballet of España) where she joined his company for the choreographic competition of Madrid. She met actor, dancer and choreographer Shahrokh Moshkin Ghalam in Paris, with whom she studied Sufi and diverse Persian dance styles. She has performed in many of his creations inspired by mystic Persian mythology and poetry, including “Haft Peykar”, “Omar Khayam”, “Dance Variation”, as well as his latest work “Love Stories of the Shahnâmeh”.

Gordafarid
The first female naqqal (Iranian epic storyteller) of Ferdowsi’s Shahnameh “Iranian National Epic”, Gordafarid, has excelled in performing traditional narration of epic stories (naqqali) through fourteen years of research, meticulous collection of narratives, and patiently following the footsteps of old masters of this ancient dramatic art. Gordafarid has come a long way in challenging conventional social norms that consider naqqali as being an art form performed by men and for men in public places such as Traditional coffeehouses. Her perseverance and determination bore fruit when Morshed Torabi, the most famous naqqal in Iran, prized her with his own cane in recognition of her achievements. She has incorporated different styles of naqqali into a seamless and unique narrative style that is all her own. Gordafarid’s stunning capability in capturing the imagination of audience has drawn large crowds to her numerous performances both inside Iran and abroad. She has also published books and articles on naqqali and offered workshops and courses on the subject at schools and universities. Her name has been recorded on the UNESCO Intangible Heritage List.

Kurdish Dance

This performance covers 7 famous styles of Kurdish dance that have been modified, rearranged and choreographed for stage performance.
1. Geryan: This is the most famous dance style in Sanandaj region and is performed in almost any happy event. The associated melody is also quite popular and nearly most of the Kurdish singers have recorded at least one song based on this melody. Mayn Zard performs 8 varieties of this style in the festival.
2. Shayaneh: Very similar to Geryan in terms of choreography but it is much more rhythmic and includes quicker moves. It is performed in almost all areas and hence played in many variations mostly called by the name of the region. For example Meryvani, Kermashani, Se-pa,…etc. 4 varieties are presented here.
3. Chepi: Most performed dance style everywhere. The choreography is simple, however, the high level of body moves involved leads to many varieties, 3 of which are presented.
4. Shekaki: Specific to northern and western parts of Kurdistan and performed widely in Iraqi and Turkish in many variety of styles.
5. Pa-ban-Pa: An almost rearranged and newly choreographed style.
6. Zangi (Zandi): An old beautiful style of southern Kurdistan that used to be performed in old days and mostly by skilled dancers. Mayn Zard has re-choreographed this style and presents 2 varieties.
7. Haw-Shari: The original choreography of this style is the famous "Dagheh" style in Mehabad region (and also Soleymanieh in Iraq) which has been rearranged and adjusted to a higher melody and rhythm.

For Tirgan 2013, the three dance artists will showcase Iranian traditional, folk and ritualistic dances adorned with a contemporary approach.

Part 1:
A Madman's Dream (رویای یک مجنون)
Choreography: Yasmine Zahedi in collaboration with Mateo G. Torres

The story of this dance is inspired by Leily and Majnoon (the madman or possessed), the masterpiece of Nezami Ganjavi (1141 to 1209) that popularized the story dramatically in Persian literature. This story of lovers serves as a wonderful metaphor for the soul and its longing for the Lord, fanaa (annihilation), divanegi (love-madness and self-sacrifice).
The two characters are not allowed to meet. Madman is self-destructive and is becoming crazy from the forbidden and unattainable love. He has roamed naked in the desert among the beasts.
One night while sleeping, Madman is on a secret date with his beloved; without making physical contact (metaphor for virgin love), they recite poetry to each other from a distance. Madman is still eager, but his beloved has changed greatly...

Part 2:
Dayereh ha ( دایره ها )

Dayereh is one of the most popular drums played in folk music of Iran. It is a medium-sized frame drum with jingles, used to accompany Iranian popular and classical music.
For this dance, the two dance artists will present a series of Iranian folk and traditional movements with two dayerehs.

Azita Sahebjam was born in Tehran, Iran. She was an active participant of Pars National Ballet since 1978 under the direction and teachings of Abdollah Nazemi. She performed all around Iran and Europe in the late 70's. In 1988, along with her husband and daughter, she migrated to Canada and established the Canadian chapter namely the “Vancouver Pars National Ballet” in 1989. Her uncompromising spirit, relentless energy, talent and motivation have helped preserve the Iranian traditional and folk dances, which otherwise would fade into oblivion given the drastic steps taken by the Islamic government of Iran. “Vancouver Pars National Ballet” has showcased Iranian folk and traditional dance in over 800 shows around the world for over 25 years.. Azita Sahebjam’s impressive influence at Vancouver Pars National Ballet, has been recognized by National and International organizations; including most recently receiving “ Queen's Jubilee Medal” award for her years ofhard work and community service “and, “The Very Hon.” Awarded by Jean Chretien, former Prime Minister of Canada, And many more

Huri is the shout of an Iranian woman’s silence liberated through Flamenco dance and music. Huri is the experience of an Iranian woman born and raised under the Islamic Republic of Iran. It’s about hopes and dreams of childhood, limitations of the society and religion, frustration, rejection of submission, acceptance and survival under oppression, and the nostalgia of an abandoned land.
Huri is choreographed and directed by Delara Tiv, an Iranian Flamenco Dancer based in Madrid, presenting Nieves Hidalgo, and Juan Triviño, two of Spain’s top Flamenco singers, and Alvaro Antona and Manuel Montero as musical director.
Huri will be bringing to the stage the essence, purity and integrity of one of the world’s most complex and mysterious art forms, flamenco. This piece strives to captivate its audience through its live performances and to evoke in them a vivid and expansive sea of passion and emotion.

Delara Tiv
Delara was born in Tehran, Iran. From the age of 6, Delara started studying music, choosing the flute as her instrument. Her passion for dance also started at a youngage. After seeing Flamenco for the first time on a video smuggled into Iran she knew she wanted to learn this art form. However the only thing similar to dance that was available in Iran was Martial Arts, which she took up until the age of 20.Delara and her family moved to Canada when she was 12. It was here at the age of 18 that shestarted studying Flamenco at the Al Mozaico school of Flamenco. Finally she was able to bring together her love for music and dancing together. At the age of 20 she decided to move to Spain to further her studies in Flamenco.She enrolled in La Tani and Flora Albaicin’s dance schools in Barcelona for a year. She then moved to Seville where she graduated from the Advanced Dance Program at the Cristina Heeren Fundación de Arte Flamenco in 2008That same year Delara returned to Vancouver to finish her post secondary education at UBC, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Human Geography and Spanish Literature. Subsequently, she began a Master's program at McGill University. However after realizing that her passion for flamenco could not be ignored nor put on hold, she did not hesitate to withdraw from university, and decided to devote her life to her dream of dancing flamencoShe has been studying intensively at the world famous Flamenco school Amor de Dios for the past four years. Learning with greats such as, Merche Esmeralda, Pedro de Cordoba, Carmela Greco, Domingo Ortega and Inmaculada Ortega. Simultaneously, she has been an active dancer in Madrid, performing in tablaos (where flamenco is performed).In 2011 Delara presented her first production Alborozo in El Teatro de Moncloa and Casa Museo de Aravaca In Madrid, dancing alongside her teacher Inmaculada Ortega as a guest artist. In March 2012, Delara presented her second project Azalea in El Teatro de Moncloa in Madrid.Delara became a part of the Domingo Ortega Flamenco Company which presented the piece “ Y Enamorarse” throughout Canada in April 2012. In the summer of 2012 Delara was invited by the Flamenco Express Company toDance at the London Theatre. During the same summer Delara colaborated with Jose Merino to present a show at the famous Ronnie Scotts in London. Delara has also been invited to teach workshops at Flamenco Eviin Istambul and Falmenco Dernegi in Ankara.
