Artist Bios:

Her childhood passion for dolls, puppets, and stage led Vida to set out on a remarkable journey of bringing puppets to life on live stage as well as the screen. An award winning puppeteer and puppet builder, Vida Ghahremani launched her artistic career in 1985. She was a regular performer on Iran’s National TV where she designed stages and puppets for numerous shows. In 1996, Vida won the Best Director’s prize at the video section of the International Children Film Festival in Iran. Since she came to Canada, Vida has been producing and directing puppet shows in Toronto where her most charming puppet, Mobarak, has won the hearts of people of all ages over and over again. Vida’s puppet performances reflect her vision of inspiring hope, confidence, happiness, and imagination in her young audience. In Tirgan, she recounts the story of “Fairy King’s Daughter” that falls in love with the commoner, Mobarak, while trying to fulfill the wish of the feeble and old king who wants to see his daughter married to a noble man of her rank. Ava Homa is a writer, a story teller and a story writing teacher. She received her Master’s degree in English and Creative Writing from University of Windsor. Echoes from the Other Land, Ava’s collection of short stories about modern Iranian women was published by TSARbooks, Toronto. Her pieces have also appeared in the Toronto Star and the Windsor Review. She is currently teaching story writing workshops and is working on her second book.
In Tirgan, Ava will tell Persian folk tales for children of all ages (in English).

Minou began her training in dance with Sashar Zarif Dance Theatre in 1994. Since then, she has performed in numerous cultural and artistic events in Canada and Europe. She has taught dance to adults and worked with children in Toronto. In Tirgan 2011, Minou will hold dance workshops (in English) for children where children of ages between six and twelve years will learn basic movements, use of props (dayereh), and sequence of phrases. They will then present a short performance for parents and audience.

Ariel is a storyteller whose repertoire derives from the literary and folklore traditions of Iran, Turkey, the Middle East and Central Asia: the Firdowsi’s Book of Kings (Shahnameh), the Nizami’s Seven Pavilions of Love (Haft Paykar), the Rumi’s Masnavi as well as the Thousand and One Nights (Hezar o yek Shab). Originally from Montreal, Ariel has been performing since 1999 in various venues in Toronto as well as Washington DC, Montreal and Ottawa. Ariel’s repertory reflects his passion for cross-cultural storytelling as well as the interaction between literary and oral traditions. In his performances, he strives to present the universality of these narratives, which may be unfamiliar to some audiences, to bring about respect and understanding towards the traditions in which they were developed. Ariel has recently released a CD “Unspoken Dreams: Tales from Rumi” with guitarist Willaim Beauvais. Ariel also has performed with traditional Persian musicians in concerts as well as school venues.
