Artist Bios:

A prolific author whose writings encompass a whole multitude of literary genres, Shahrnush Parsipur started her writing career at the early age of sixteen. A graduate of Sociology from Tehran University, her study of Chinese Philosophy and Language at Sorbonne had a formative impact on skilled manipulation of myths and near mythical figures in the plots of such best sellers as “Women without Men” and “Touba and the Meaning of Night”. Voices of dissent in recent tumultuous epochs of Iranian history along with Parsipur’s criticism of degrading social practices against Iranian women and her personal introspections have been interweaved to narrate the voyage of Iranian psyche at large in modern times. Her awards and recognitions include an honorary doctorate degree from Brown University, the Hilman-Hammet (twice) and Prima Literary award from Italy. Parsipur has had numerous book readings in Europe and North America, and a number of her novels have been translated to English, German, and Russian. A movie based on her novel “Women without Men” won the best director award at the Venice Film Festival. Parsipur’s venture into prohibited realms of politics and religion has put her at odds with ruling authorities before and after revolution and led to her forced migration to the U.S.
Parsipur will have two book readings in Tirgan (in Persian).

A graduate of Fine Arts from Tehran University with a prodigious artistic talent, Maroufi has been director of Tehran Symphony Orchestra, founder of Tehran-based literary Gardoon magazine, and author of numerous award winning and widely read novels. His “Symphony of the Dead” written in keeping with movements of a musical symphony displays formative impact of his background in music on his writing. Belonging to the post-revolution generation of Iranian writers, his novels focus on individual struggles with social and historical dogma. Translations of Maroufi’s writings into other languages have brought him international readership and praise by winning awards from “Arnold Zweig Foundation” and “Surkamp Publishing House” for German translations of his works. The style of Maroufi’s writings and his commitment to freedom of expression led to his forced migration to Germany where he founded Gardoon Press and Publishing House.
Mr. Maroufi will have two book readings in Tirgan (in Persian).

Artist Bios:

Dr. Mohammad Estelami is the author and editor of over twenty volumes of books, literary texts, and references in the field of Persian Sufi literature. Having received his Ph.D. in Persian literature from University of Tehran, he pursued a long and fruitful teaching career in various institutions of higher education in Iran and later became professor of Persian Language and Literature in McGill University in Montreal where he is an emeritus professor. He has also been a visiting professor and scholar in many Universities such as University of California at Berkeley, Tokyo University of Foreign Studies, University of Pennsylvania, and Princeton. Prof. Estelami has been an invited speaker in many international conferences on Rumi, and his publications in Persian include seven volumes of Rumi’s Masnavi, Dars-e Hafiz (Understanding Hafiz), A Review/Survey of Modern Persian Literature (Barrasi-e Adabiayt-e Emurz-e Iran), Attar’s “Tazkerat-ul-Aulia” and many textbooks. Professor Estelami will be delivering a talk in Persian on the concept of “Eternity” in Persian literature.
