Artist Bios:

A visionary with laudable determination and perseverance, Nima Kiann founded “Les Ballets Persans” in 2002 as the reincarnation of the former Iranian National Ballet. The company’s thematic repertoire ranges from classical ballets such as Scheherazade and Seven Beauties to neoclassical works like Babek and contemporary productions such as Femme inspired equally by Iranian literary and spiritual masterpieces and current social issues. Having acquired a multi-disciplinary training in painting, calligraphy and graphics, Kiann received his dance education at the Gothenburg Ballet Academy in Sweden and Centre de Danse International de Rosella Hightower in Cannes, France.
In 2007, he founded European Dance Project to explore ties between artistic creativity and such dramatic social phenomena as peace, dislocation, and longing through annual productions of dance performances by young ballet graduates from across the world. The project offers the select group of dancers a unique opportunity to enhance their skills and knowledge of Ballet.
As a dance scholar, Kiann has published many articles on various aspects of Iranian dance and has been a frequent guest speaker on the subject at conferences and cultural gatherings.

Kurdish dances reflect aspects of Kurdish life over the past thousands of years. Rhythmic and elegant movements are called Halparke. The dancers, hand in hand, are depositaries of centuries of revealed culture in Halparke that indicates their unity in history. These movements differ in different parts of Kurdistan reflecting the variety of point of views, and joy and sorrow have their own special place. Kurds sing and dance in all of their festivals, birthdays, and marriage ceremonies. These folkloric dances are one of the main factors which distinguish Kurds from neighbouring Muslim populations.
Kurdish House Dance Group was formed in July 2007 and since then the ensemble has preformed in over a dozen cultural events. Tirgan 2011 hosts performances of a few different styles of Kurdish dance such as; Dilan, Chopi, Sepe, Garanavaand Shikhan.

Founded by Artistic Director Dr. Laurel Victoria Gray in 1995, the award-winning Silk Road Dance Company (SRDC) presents women's dance traditions from along the Great Silk Road trade route. Their imaginative concerts promote “cultural understanding through Beauty and Delight.” Silk Road Dance Company has performed at museums, universities and festivals throughout the US. They were the first American dance ensemble to perform in Samarkand, Uzbekistan at the Sharq Taronalari International Festival.
Ethnically diverse, SRDC dancers have mastered a wide range of styles, including rare choreographies that are part of the company's “Legacy Repertiore”. Other pieces include new dances by Dr. Gray, inspired by Persianate and Turkic cultures
In 2003, SRDC won the International Academy of Middle Eastern Dance Award for Best Dance Company and Dr. Gray won the Kennedy Center Local Dance Commissioning Project award. The Fulbright Association selected Dr. Gray to deliver the annual Selma Jeanne Cohen International Dance Scholar Lecture at their 2009 conference.
Silk Road will present Canadian premier of a repertoire of folkloric dances and a workshop in Persian dance (in English).

Ida Saki, originally from Dallas, Texas, is attending her first year at Tisch School of the Arts at New York University. Ida has created a name for herself within the dance world and continues to inspire audiences with every performance. She has received an award for modern dance from the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts. Ida was named a Texas Young Master in dance, and has received five national titles, including Distinguished Performer of the Year and Outstanding Dancer of the Year. Ida has graced the cover of the prestigious Dance Spirit Magazine and has appeared within the magazine numerous times. Beyond her dancing, Ida was selected to present her choreography in Miami, Florida, as a part of the National High School Dance Festival, where she received the Outstanding Choreography Award and was able to perform in the festival’s gala. Most recently, Ida was selected along with nineteen other artists to meet President Obama and be named Presidential Scholar in the Arts. Ida Saki will perform a modern dance based on a traditional Persian music.

Ayar (Happiness in Azeri) Dance Ensemble was founded in Toronto, Canada. Members of Ayar Ensemble have been performing since 2006 at various venues and cultural events in Toronto such as Toronto Turkish festival, Norooz celebrations, and Iranian Heritage day at Royal Ontario Museum (ROM).
